How Can I Increase Case Acceptance in My Dental Practice?

Most dentists think case acceptance is about having the right script. It’s not. Scripts help, but they are not the real issue.

The real issue is that most patients hear the treatment recommendation before they fully understand the problem, before they emotionally connect to why it matters, and before they trust the path forward. That is where cases get lost. Here is one simple shift you can make immediately: Stop presenting treatment too early.

Before you say, “You need a crown,” slow down and help the patient see what you see.

  • Show them the crack.

  • Show them the bone loss.

  • Show them the wear.

  • Show them the infection.

  • Show them the problem in a way they can understand.

Then pause. Let them own it.When the patient sees the problem first, your recommendation feels helpful. When the recommendation comes first, it can feel like sales. Big difference. A better question to ask yourself is:

“Does this patient understand the problem well enough that my recommendation makes sense?”

If the answer is no, you are presenting too soon. That one change can immediately improve trust, reduce resistance, and make treatment conversations feel less awkward.

Inside the free Introduction Training, I walk through why patients say no, where dentists unknowingly lose cases, and the communication shift most dentists were never taught. Because case acceptance is not luck. It is a skill. And once you learn the right order, the conversation gets easier for you, easier for your team, and easier for the patient.
